About YouTube

YouTube is a video platform with millions of videos, so managing the quality of every aspect of the YouTube platform is nearly an impossible task. Because of this, features are not able to receive the development time they need. The subtitle translation feature is one of them.

The Problem

YouTube users are unable save a language they translated their captions in for future videos, so each time a new video is played, users must turn on captions and choose their preferred language.

Empathizing with the User

Foreign Language Student

Jen is a 25 y/o YouTube user currently enrolled in Hebrew class at night.

She watches a lot of YouTube videos, and wants to view subtitles in Hebrew when watching videos.

Every time she views a new video, her preferred subtitle language doesn’t save and she has to re-select it at the start of each video.

The Solution

I redesigned the YouTube subtitle translation feature so users like Jen can save their current subtitle language to apply to future videos.

Redesigned Menus

I redesigned the menus for YouTube’s subtitle translation feature to make it easy to save a selected language to apply to future videos.

Conclusion

With the redesigned subtitle translation flow, Jen and other users are able to save their preferred language for subtitle translation.

More Ideas

For an enhanced learning experience:

  • Add the ability to switch between a user’s default language and their current/saved language, either by clicking or hovering over a user’s active subtitles.
