Summary

TENG is a Twitter Engagement Platform that helps people build a community on Twitter.

I got the name from T(witter) + ENG(agement) = TENG

The Situation

Twitter is a powerful platform that allows people to learn, connect with others and share their thoughts to the world. But there are also limitations to using Twitter. Because of the prioritization of ads and revenue, Twitter doesn’t let you easily recall who you engaged with and how intimately you engaged with them.

A recent Twitter feature addition allows users to choose between seeing either a) tweets from the people they follow, or b) tweets recommended to them by Twitter.

This feature was added in response to complaints by some Twitter users who wanted to see tweets from people they follow instead of content recommended to them.

Pain Points include:

  • It’s not possible to filter one type of engagement in a single feed (i.e. Tweets, Replies, Quotetweets)
  • Twitter doesn’t allow you to easily view the different engagements you’ve sent and received
  • There are no analytics to improve how you engage

The Solution

TENG is a Twitter Engagement Platform that helps people engage more efficiently on Twitter.

Features include:

  • User Dashboard– Gives users a glance of their Twitter activity, including recent engagements, analytics and scheduled tweets.
  • Following, Follower and Group pages– Helps a user organize followers and following, view user information, and see their most frequently contacted followers
  • Engagements page– Shows the different engagements users have made to you, including; Replies, Quote Tweets, Likes, Retweets, Mentions and New Followers.
  • Sent Tweet page– Displays a chronological log of your sent Tweets, Replies, Retweets, Quotetweets, Likes and Threads.
  • User Feed page– Allows you to keep track of tweets from interesting people.
  • Scheduled Tweets page– Provides you the flexibility to schedule tweets ahead of time, and tag scheduled tweets with colored labels.
  • Analytics page- Gives users the ability to see how effective their engagements were

Landscape analysis for TENG

For the research for TENG, I conducted extensive analysis of three Twitter engagement platforms. I paid special attention to the information architecture, features, user flows and UI design each platform used.

Sign-in

The first screen a user sees is the login screen, which I kept simple.

User Feed

The User Feed page allows a user to see their Recent Activity, Analytics and Scheduled Tweets. A fixed side nav allows users to navigate to other areas of the platform.

Following, Followers and Groups

The Following, Followers and Groups pages are where you go to see the Twitter users you’re following, and who is following you. This page helps you keep track of what your Twitter friends are talking about.

Engagements

The Engagements page is where you go to see the engagements you’ve received from other People, including Replies, Quote Tweets, Likes, Retweets, Mentions and New Followers.

You can also filter the results by Date range and Keywords.

Sent Tweets

The Sent Tweets page is used to keep track of the different tweets and outbound engagements you make, including Tweets, Replies, Quote Tweets, Retweets, Likes and Threads.

User Feed

The User Feed is used to keep track of Twitter users you want to keep track of. The User Feed is composed of their Followers, Following and Groups you’ve created.

Scheduled Tweets

Scheduled Tweets provides you the flexibility to schedule tweets ahead of time and assign colored labels to tweets.

Analytics

The Analytics section helps you see the data behind your engagements.

Some questions to consider

How much does a user want a platform that helps them improve their engaging versus simply making it easier to engage?

While using TENG, how much would a user still want to use Twitter to get an engagement’s full context?

Will Twitter ever be designed to prioritize community building and general relationship building over ads, trends and promoted tweets?

More ideas for future development

Direct Messaging

Direct messages are the most intimate form of communication on Twitter and would be a nice feature to add to TENG.

Tweet Writing Assistance

With the popularity of ChatGPT and other AI driven platforms, TENG would benefit from adding a writing tool that automates writing more compelling tweets.

A UI that gives us more choices

With Twitter allowing users to choose whether they want to see recommended content or content from their friends, it would be a nice addition for TENG to allow users to customize the UI they want.
