The Situation
I built a desktop prototype for an app that makes it easy to find skilled people who can help with tasks, including:
- Cleaning
- Reorganizing
- Changing lightbulbs, fixtures etc.
I also wanted to explore Accessibility in this prototype, and decided on the Light/Dark feature present in some applications.
Competitive Research
I conducted research on 5 gig applications, paying attention to their information architecture, page layouts and UX writing.
The applications I researched were:
- Angi’s List
- Handy
- TaskRabbit
- Thumbtack
- Yelp
Research Takeaways
From the research, I noticed that all of the apps have common user actions including:
- Logging in, Logging out and Signing up
- Searching for a Business and Viewing Search Results
- Applying and Adjusting Filters
- Viewing and Saving a Business Profile
- Completing the “Get a Quote” flow
- Leaving a Review
- Viewing Settings
Features for my prototype
The prototype I built for this case study has the following capabilities:
- Logging in and Logging out
- Viewing Search Results
- Viewing a Business Profile
- Completing the “Get a Quote” flow
As for the accessibility focus, I added the ability to change from Light to Dark Mode and back after logging in.
User Research
I conducted user research to better understand how real people have used gig apps in the past. I also wanted to learn how people completed tasks they couldn’t physically do themselves.
For my survey, I spoke with 5 people via phone and asked them the following questions:
- Have you used online websites to book home services before?
- If so, what website(s) did you use and how was your experience?
- How do you accomplish tasks in your home that you can’t physically complete yourself?
- Have you booked home services off-line?
- If so, how does this experience compare to booking online, if you’ve done so?
User Survey Results
- 5/5 participants have had a friend/family member help them with a task
- 4/5 participants said they ask for help to complete tasks because they felt it would be unsafe to do alone.
- 3/5 participants would prefer to book someone to perform all tasks they need done
- 2/5 participants mentioned it being easier to book home services online than off-line.
Lo-Fi Mockup – Light Mode
The survey results helped guide the initial mockups. I created the design in Light Mode first, then Dark Mode.
